Arrived in the Top End
Hello dear ones at home.
Today there is again a blog entry:) Last Sunday, we are in Darwin, the Top End of Australia have arrived and on the road since Broome again experienced some beautiful and exciting.
From Broome, we wanted to actually drive over Derby on the Gibb River Road ", an unpaved road for more than 600km long druch the beautiful area of the Kimberleys. But we have decided on the day of departure or otherwise, because the road was said to be quite muddy and slippery by rain. Was also predicted more rain and we did not want to risk stranded somewhere because a river passage is too deep or something of that nature so we went on the normal highway. The track was indeed much more boring, but it went faster. Time, aside from a few things were at the "Gibb locked" and we had not we can look at, so it would have made little sense to go the distance. So we went in two days on the Highway from Broome to Kununurra, the other end of the "Gibb". From there we are then still drove a piece of the "Gibb", first to Emma Gorge and then to El Questro Gorge. Two magnificent canyons that begin on a waterfall.
The warnings about the road conditions were not wrong, because after the first few kilometers on the "Gibb" Willi looked like hell, spattered with mud and filth, because the road was really crappy and slippery. But Emma Gorge was soon reached and we could start our little walk. Unfortunately it started raining again just slightly, so we had to unpack our rain jackets. Then went off the 3km long hike. First it was a pretty trail through dense rain forest, but soon the path was difficult and we had to climb over some rocks to get ahead. Several times we had while Emma Creek, so the river flows through the gorge crossing, - possible without getting wet feet;) The water in the creek was so clear and clean, which one could drink it without any problems. Good for us, because we had forgotten to pack what to drink. After an hour we had reached the end of the gorge, the place where the waterfall is in a permanent water hole where you can swim beautifully. We have then done the same, although we had no bathing suits it, but it has so often underwear: p Despite the fact the weather was not a Bathing weather (it rained still) the bathroom was wonderfully refreshing. Once we were fairly dry in the air it went on his way back to the parking lot, because we wanted to still go to the El Questro Gorge and had to get there (for other statements) has worst fears.
To the junction to the Gorge was all still quite pleasant, although the road was often as corrugated iron, but we had to be there even now somewhat shaken usual. But from the turnoff to the Gorge, then the sign was "4WD Track, our fears were true, for a huge, fairly muddy-looking puddle in front of us. Fortunately had some others before us had a ring around the hole stuck - even through we had to. After the track was also quite in order. Except for a few small puddles was nothing special - until that one moment. Behind a bend appeared a 50m long water hole, which, unfortunately, rather dull and not by estimate was. Tina has just said "you are going through over my dead body" and would be reversed if possible immediately, because this time it did not pass - we HAD to by. Fortunately, directly behind another car that was virtually not much different than ours. We have vorbeigelassen them and they are driven through without hesitation and have also managed just fine on the other side. So for me was like the decision - if the can, we can too. So was Willi startklargemacht and it went off. First, it was not really deep, was then the first 5 m but then it down a bit and thus the water was always higher:-o A few yards further it went a little high, and again just before the end down a bit before then the rather steep exit came. A lucky - we had made it. But it was really tight. Although the water was only about 50cm deep, it has built up in front of us pretty high, because getting stuck in fear I am a little run faster. The first hurdle we had so easily mastered, but it was hardly better, for around the next corner was already the next hole. So new game - new luck. This time, however, it was even easier, because that was really just a deep puddle, perhaps 25cm deep, this was of course without trouble;)
The rest of the track was then distracted right and stony, but without major obstacles. The hard work had paid off, however, because the hike in the Gorge was really beautiful. We are but this time did not go all the way, because you should plan for at least 5 hours, so we had a lot of time but no longer exist. So we are half way back to the car and vice versa. The return trip through the Great waterhole we were actually still present difficult, because the driveway was very steep and we were afraid to dive too deep. The biggest concern with such water crossings, is the one, if you're unlucky, water gets through the air filter in the engine. And that would be virtually the Exitus;) So we were both pretty excited and nervous, but we took it slow down and thus had no problem. Too easy! ;)
On the way back to the tarred road was then normal, as always. Although somewhat dirty but that we had expected. Back in Kununurra, we then have purchased something and are then set off to Lake Argyle, a reservoir which can hold up to 18 times more water than the harbor in Sydney, provided it is jammed full, but he was the last time in the 70s. It was, unfortunately, long since dark when we arrived so we could again enjoy a view of the lake. We then made the next morning before we went on. There is a small road that leads around to the two observation points and we can finally go to the dam. After we had done that we drove to Katherine. That meant for us, that we had to leave the beautiful Western Australia and again in the Northern Territory were. This does not mean however that it is less beautiful there;) ride after a few hours we checked in Katherine at the campsite and have a little walk to the hot springs made in the town. Diese sind zwar nicht tatsächlich heiß, aber im Gegensatz zu normalem Quellwasser ziemlich warm, sodass man schön drin baden kann. Eine Abkühlung sind sie aber keinesfalls ;)
The next morning we then spent the Katherine Gorge to go and make a small hike. The Gorge itself we were not particularly impressive, although he is quite broad and deep, but compared to other canyons he has not knocked us:) So are we just continued on to the real goal for the day, the Litchfield National Park. This is located about 100km south of Darwin and has some beautiful waterfalls and wonderful swimming offer. In addition, there is one area in which many weather-beaten and crumbling sandstone pillars and walls are. These are "Lost City" (the lost city called), because the formations may well remember the ruins of a city. Since we were late in the afternoon because we have only looked for a campsite and prepared our camp. After a rather hot and muggy night we went to Florence Falls, our first timefor for this day. To come to the foot of the falls had to get down 135 steps (and unfortunately on the way back and up again), but was rewarded with a nice refreshing swim. This place seemed quite popular with tour operators, so it was really full. We are then, after we had sufficiently refreshed, went back to the car and only a few kilometers to the "Buley Rockhole. There, the river flows downstream through some water holes arranged in terraces. These holes are up to 5m deep and invite any case for a swim! We had a slowdown anyway schonwieder necessary because it was (and still is) damn hot and muggy here in the north.
We are then quickly continued on to be the first to the "Lost City", which I have described above schonmal. Then it went to the Tolmer case, "a fairly high waterfall, where you can swim, however. From a vantage punk but you can watch as he plunges into the depths.
The Wangi Falls were "then the last stop for the day. There we have also set up our camp and tried not to be mad, despite the heat;) Baden is currently at the Wangi Falls also prohibited because crocodiles can occur occasionally, especially when this much water in the Creek.
The next day it was called then to Darwin. The last highlight for us were in the park for us, the hills of the "magnetic Termites" (magnetic termites). This direct their termite mound exactly after the passage of the sun. The hills look like tombstones. The wide sides are facing the morning and evening sun and the narrow sides of the hot midday sun. This brings the termites a constant temperature is not in their castle and overheat. Clever animals!
Then it went for us on to Darwin where we are now even. Here we waiting for Tina's birthday and from then drive on to Kakadu National Park. This is probably one of the last major events here in Australia. Then we drive back after a quasi Cairns. However, with a stop at "our" cattle ranch where we were at the beginning of our trip already.
So then, we will get back safely soon! And now they have fun with the pictures:)
See you soon,
Love from Tina & Timo
